Position Summary

The Social Media & Communications Associate will support Freedom House’s communications efforts to improve visibility on social networking and new media sites, promote media outreach, and help prepare online and print publications. This position will work directly with the Communications team. They will support the Communications and Publications teams by creating and disseminating marketing materials and social media content to support and enhance Freedom House’s web and social media presence. This position will assist with researching Freedom House's key media and influencer stakeholders and editing Facebook, Twitter, media relations and website content. The position will also work on publication promotion, provide day-of event assistance, assist with executing social media strategies, and help with special outreach projects as they arise. They will have the opportunity to work directly with Freedom House’s external audiences.

This temporary position requires a commitment of 25 hours per week. Candidates must be able to work east coast hours.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, design, international relations, marketing or related field (additional experience may be recognized as substitute for Bachelor’s degree)
  • 3+ years of communications, public relations or graphic design experience (previous internship experience also considered)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and command of the English language are required. A mastery of English grammar and experience adhering to editorial style guides
  • Knowledge of other languages a plus.
  • Experience using a website content management system such as Drupal or Wordpress to upload and edit blogs, press releases, or other content
  • Experience using an email marketing platform such as Salsa Labs, Pardot, or MailChimp to send out newsletters, email marketing notices, press releases, event invitations, or other promotional content
  • Experience with basic event promotion, familiarity with Eventbrite and Zoom events preferred
  • Experience with the creation and management of time-sensitive materials
  • Advanced MSOffice skills, including Outlook calendar management and meeting planning
  • Experience with social media promotion using Twitter and Facebook. Familiarity with Hootsuite, Sprout Social, and similar tools preferred.
  • Strong ability to plan, organize, prioritize work and multitask to meet tight deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience creating graphics and editing photos in Adobe Photoshop, and familiarity with either Adobe Illustrator or Adobe InDesign.
  • Interest in international human rights and/or international relations
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and website management best practices
  • Familiarity with social media influencer outreach campaigns and outreach practices
  • Familiarity with any type of plug-and-play design apps such as Canva, Adobe Spark, Piktochart or Infogram.

Some Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the Communications Specialist to produce brand-relevant social media promotion, marketing copy, newsletters, and more.
  • Write and edit engaging, well-crafted content for social media, websites, email newsletters, press releases, and more.
  • Assist with updating and maintaining Freedom House’s website content and blog, adding external links, statements, and other news and perspectives
  • Provide logistical support for virtual promotional events
  • Provide administrative support to the Communications team
  • Coordinate with the Publications’ teams in creating social media content and social media press kits related to report releases and current events related to Freedom House’s work.
  • Manage scheduling and publication for Freedom House blog, help manage team Editorial Calendar
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for day-to-day functioning of the Communications Team, including some web analytics, metrics, and media relations tracking documents.
  • Adhere to deadlines and quick turnaround times for rapid response, as needed, while prioritizing and working on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Assist with other special projects and other duties as assigned.
