The Opportunity

Save the Children is hiring a Regional Humanitarian Communications Specialist to ensure the production of high-quality humanitarian information products and communications materials for a wide range of internal and external audiences, including SCI/Members, institutional and private donors, international media outlets, and the general public.

This position will be primarily responsible for 1) increasing the visibility of humanitarian crises in LAC - with a special emphasis on the Venezuela and Central American migration crises, as well as major natural disasters such as the November 2020 Eta/Iota Hurricanes - through concerted, strategic coordination with all relevant Country Office, Domestic members, Regional Office, and SCI/Member colleagues; 2) producing high-quality regional communications materials and information products focused on humanitarian emergencies; 3) supporting Country Offices in the production of mandatory key deliverables for humanitarian emergencies at the country level according to their SCI categorization; 4) providing specific support to Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela to facilitate coherent and impactful communication efforts around the Venezuela Regional Crisis; and 5) strengthening humanitarian communications capacity for LAC Country Offices to ensure that the region is prepared to respond to humanitarian crises, including rapid-onset disasters and major Category 1-2 emergencies.

Responsibilities

4) providing specific support to Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela to facilitate coherent and impactful communication efforts around the Venezuela Regional Crisis; and

5) strengthening humanitarian communications capacity for LAC Country Offices to ensure that the region is prepared to respond to humanitarian crises, including rapid-onset disasters and major Category 1-2 emergencies.

To be successful you will have:

  • University degree in a relevant subject; Master's degree preferred
  • At least 5 years of experience in humanitarian communications, including field experience in international humanitarian/emergency settings or other relevant contexts
  • Fluency in both, speaking and writing, in Spanish and English is essential
  • Proven track record of developing a wide range of high-quality internal/external communications products; ability to appropriately adjust communication/writing style depending on the target audience
  • Superior writing and editing skills for key communications products, including but not limited to briefing documents, case studies, press releases, talking points/key messages, dashboards, fundraising materials, blogs, and reports
  • Strong story-telling skills; ability to be both engaging and nuanced and make a complex story sound simple yet impactful
  • Experience gathering content or otherwise working in insecure or sensitive environments; demonstrated ability to interview vulnerable people (including children) about sensitive subjects keeping their best interests at heart
  • Experience with social media/digital strategies and/or developing content for social media
  • Full computer literacy in standard Microsoft Office products
  • Cross-cultural experience, understanding and sensitivity
  • Ability to travel to difficult/complex emergency settings as required
