Job Purpose:

Provide outpatient and/or inpatient medical care to patients/beneficiaries according to adapted and updated medical knowledge, MSF protocols, values and universal hygiene standards to improve the patients/beneficiaries health conditions.


  • Apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnose and prevent. Carry out outpatient and inpatient consultations, prescribing the necessary treatment respecting MSF protocols. **
  • Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, checking they have understood. **
  • Follow up the evolution of the hospitalized/IDP patients through daily visits , consultations and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment following MSF protocols, deciding whether they can be discharged or transferred to other departments – in collaboration with other doctors- and informing their family about the patient’s evolution. **
  • Check and control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility and take care of the quality, disinfection and sterilization of the medical material. Assure general compliance with standing hygiene standards. **
  • Participate in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data, checking its validity and informing the line manager or project coordinator about any problem or complication of the patient's illness, medical error and monitors the proper functioning of the department, equipment or material. **
  • Ensure ongoing training of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care. **
  • Knows and ensures all MSF medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control. Ensures professional confidentiality is respected. **
  • Manage the team under his/her direct responsibility according to MSF HR policies and procedures, supervising their performance, organizing and scheduling shifts and rotations, directly participating in emergencies and on calls if necessary. **

Job Accountabilities – Field Focus

Marib Project is a complex project with activities in:

a) MSF only Primary Health Care through one fixed PHC facility and 8 mobile clinic sites**

b) Trauma Care support to Marib General Hospital (MGH)’s the patient pathway from the Emergency department, ICU, OT and surgical wards**

c) Community Health Programme: surveillance, awareness, health promotion, referrals, hygiene promotion and mental health**

MGH is the identified trauma hospital in Marib Governorate and receives war-wounded patients (both military and civilian) from the frontline (which is very close to the city), as well as trauma patients from Marib city and other areas in the Governorate. Currently, the Emergency Department in MGH does not have an Emergency Medicine Specialist, and therefore the department lacks the leadership skills and expertise required to efficiently and safely manage a large number of severely injured patients it sees. **

The role of the Emergency Medicine Specialist, additional to the generic accountabilities indicated above (excluding numbers 1 and 3), include:**

  • Providing much-needed leadership, support and supervision to junior Medical Doctors (& a nursing staff team with a varying degree of skills and experience) in addressing the acute trauma care needs of patients received in an Emergency Department that sees an extremely high amount of severely injured trauma and war-wounded patients. **

  • Participating inflexible work hours, as a large majority of war-wounded patients from the frontlines arrive at MGH late at night or during the weekend.**

  • Identify the gaps in trauma patient management and the “Trauma Pathway” within Marib Governorate, and plan on correction methods that commensurate with resources available and/or maybe donated by MSF **

  • Capacity building of MGH & MSF staff on trauma patient management, including skills/experience acquisition and the implementation of and adherence to trauma management protocols**

  • Together with the hospital authorities and other relevant actors (namely the Military Medical Committee), review and advice on changes required to the “Trauma Pathway” within Marib Governorate**

  • Formulate reporting systems for both MGH management and MSF data collection**

  • Participate in the project’s weekly and monthly reporting**

Ø Airway Management, Clinical Indications for Intubation/Ventilation**

Ø Management of Traumatic Brain Injury**

Ø Management of Severe Haemorrhage & Damage Control Resuscitation**

Ø Safe Blood Transfusion, Massive Blood Transfusion**

Ø Management of Trauma Pain**

Ø Rational Antibiotic Use**

Ø Clinical Documentation, Clinical Monitoring**

Ø Intra-hospital Hand-over and Transfer of Care, Inter-facility Transfer and Referral**

Ø Infection Prevention and Control, Waste Management, and Hygiene**

Learning needs of the Emergency Department staff (which may not be limited to the following):**

Ø Advanced Trauma Life Support**

Ø Advanced Cardiac Life Support**

Ø Mass Casualty Plan Implementation / Mass Casualty Response; Triage**

Ø Rational Use of Blood and Blood products**

Ø Basic Interpretation of X-ray and CT Scan (doctors)**

Ø FAST ultrasound: POCUS (doctors)**

Ø Basic Fracture Management and Immobilization (doctors)**

Ø Intraosseous Access Placement (doctors)**



Medical Doctor diploma Desirable Diploma in Tropical Medicine (For OCB & OCBA Tropical Medicine Is essential)


2 years experience minimum as a Medical Doctor or in clinical work (can be within medical training). Desirable in tropical medicine or post-registration experience in Public Health , obs and gynae, paediatrics, A&E, infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS/STDs, TB, general practice, general medicine or minor surgery.


English, Arabic and/or French


Essential computer literacy (word, excel)

· Training experience – and confident enough to train and supervise national staff**
