Overview

In close coordination with USAID, the program will contribute to the US government efforts to address the root causes of irregular migration from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, including increasing community and institutional resilience.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Communications Officer will provide strategic direction to, and support the design and dissemination of, a broad range of communications products that will inform a diverse group of program stakeholders on the work of the project.

The Communications Officer will work closely with the COP, Senior Knowledge Management (KM) Manager technical team members and the Grants Manager to engage with the Salvadoran Government, civil society, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, and US government officials to guide the design of products that demonstrate changes in irregular migration in El Salvador.

REPORTING & SUPERVISION
The Communications Officer will report to the Senior Knowledge Management (KM) Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a communications strategy that will effectively inform program stakeholders and audiences (i.e. USAID, host government, private sector, civil society, youth leaders and media) about program activities and outcomes of program approaches.
  • Develop briefing materials, scene setters, and other communication tools that may be needed to effectively communicate with stakeholders and USAID.
  • Support the collaboration of civil society and media to raise awareness of citizen priorities.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a social media and digital strategy to engage communities, youth and other stakeholders.
  • Lead and oversee the development of other communications products including graphics, photography and video.
  • Maintain communications calendar and report out on results of communications efforts
  • Design technical presentations on program achievements to implementing partners, civil society organizations, government officials, donor, and other organizations.
  • Contribute to drafting reports that document lessons learned, challenges and new opportunities, and accomplishments (success stories) in collaboration with Creative Home Office, client and implementing partners.
  • Write and edit success stories, collaborating with colleagues to identify story topics and conduct interviews.
  • Collaborate with home office to review current program branding templates. Ensure branding guidelines and clearances are understood and followed by Creative staff and implementing partners.
  • Support the Chief of Party (COP) to develop the project strategic framework and work plans for the program implementation to ensure the achievement of the program goals.
  • Lead the development and implementation of a social media and digital strategy to engage communities, youth and other stakeholders.
  • Lead and oversee the development of other communications products including graphics, photography and video.
  • Maintain communications calendar and report out on results of communications efforts.**Qualifications**

  • High School diploma required. University degree highly desired in a related area, such as communications, international studies, social sciences, etc.

  • Must have 4 years of general work experience, and 2+ years of specific in communications, youth and violence reduction initiatives and irregular migration with international development programs in Central America, preferably with USAID or other donor-funded programs.

  • Medium level knowledge of English.

  • Fluency in Spanish.

  • Demonstrated leadership and strategic thinking.

  • Demonstrated capability to work with a broad range of host country government, civil society and partners.

  • Able to work effectively with diverse groups of stakeholders within and among government, civil society, private sector and development partners.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation experience to multidisciplinary audiences; and a demonstrated track record of working effectively in a team environment.

  • Strong skills in project management techniques to plan and implement communication and public information activities.

  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to a variety of audiences and across a variety of media, as appropriate, including social media platforms, and engaging with media.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing communications materials in support of advocating for issues.

  • Excellent coordination and interpersonal skills.

  • Good computer skills including PowerPoint, Excel, Word and other software relevant to presentations and graphics.

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or social media management platforms desired.

  • Existing relationships with local media.

  • Must have existing work authorization for El Salvador.
