Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). It conducts research to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.
The Sandec Department (Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development) at Eawag is currently looking to fill a new position for a backstopping mandate on WASH in humanitarian settings, for the Geneva Technical Hub by UNHCR financed by Swiss Humanitarian Aid (SDC/HA).

Sandec seeks a highly motivated and qualified individual to work in the Strategic Environmental Sanitation Planning (SESP) research group. The main objective will be to provide backstopping services on humanitarian Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) topics, including solid waste management. The main tasks of this position include coordinating the backstopping mandate, gathering and analysing the current state of knowledge, providing timely backstopping on questions from the field, communicating with the project team, collaborators, contracting and implementation partners, organizing trainings, meetings and teaching and conducting applied research.

Responsibilities

  • Providing worldwide technical backstopping for UNHCRs WASH operations
  • Coordination of the backstopping mandate with UNHCR and SDC/HA
  • Communication and networking with project team, management, stakeholders and collaborators
  • Managing SDC/HA-funded budget, compiling operational and financial reports
  • Develop and pursue new collaborations with implementation partners (e.g. humanitarian NGOs), researchers, students, and interns in applied research projects
  • Compile factsheets for a variety of humanitarian WASH technologies
  • Develop proposals for externally funded research on humanitarian responses
  • Carrying out research and presenting at international sector meetings or conferences
  • Organising meetings, trainings and carrying out teaching duties

Requirements

  • A Masters degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, solid waste management, water / sanitary engineering, resources management or comparable
  • >1 year work experience beneficial
  • Experience working in humanitarian aid contexts, at humanitarian organisations headquarters level, in humanitarian research, or comparable
  • Knowledge of the humanitarian WASH sector necessary, knowledge of waste management beneficial
  • Fluency in English necessary, knowledge of French beneficial
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a dedicated team
  • Willingness for worldwide travel, also to remote regions and contexts like refugee camps

The position starting date is 1 July 2021 (or as soon as available) and it´s a one year contract with a possible option for extension.
