We are seeking to fill a Fixed-Term position of IT Operations Assistant G5 based in our WFP New York Office, United States of America.

The UN System and Multilateral Engagement Division, based in New York, is a key interface between WFP and international political, peace and security, development, and humanitarian actors. The Division works to galvanize WFP’s government partners to fulfil their commitments under the 2030 Agenda, mobilizing attention and efforts towards a world without hunger.

WFP’s New York office advances its mandate through strategic engagement with key stakeholders in the United Nations multilateral environment, permanent missions, the Secretariat, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes based in New York, private sector entities, civil society organizations, media and news outlets, and academia, among others.


Under the general supervision of the Deputy Country Director of WFP New York Office, and with direct supervision of the Senior External relations Officer, the IT Operations Assistant will be responsible to deliver high quality technical support, system and data maintenance in order to contribute to the effective delivery of IT services. The selected incumbent will be in charge of managing the IT assets, delivering trainings and liaising with external service providers and suppliers, while maintaining contact with the TEC Division in WFP Headquarters. The IT Operations Assistant will be required to possess excellent analysis, communication, teamwork and partnering skills with some cultural and political understanding.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive)

  1. Carry out system maintenance tasks, such as performing monitoring tasks, running system diagnostics, and system optimization, to ensure they are running effectively and enable easy and efficient use.

  2. Maintain technology, including standard repairs, configuration, and storage, in accordance with data security and access controls to ensure IT equipment required for WFP staff is available.

  3. Prepare files and systems for inventory and archives, such as website content and directories, to ensure information is accurate and up to date.

  4. Allocate tasks to other colleagues, ensuring that tasks are delivered to agreed standards and deadlines, to support the effective delivery of correspond to a variety of queries about technology and systems to assist WFP staff to deliver their services.

  5. With support of senior colleagues, provide standard training to end users of technology and systems to ensure staff use standard technology and systems effectively.

  6. Perform routine deployments of server hardware and software, including testing and the identification of problems, to contribute to the effective functioning of technology.

  7. Responsible for maintaining information records such as updating web pages and statistical databases to ensure the information is current and well organized.

  8. Install, operate, and maintain telecommunications systems and equipment, to ensure optimal services in compliance with standard operations procedures.

  9. Support the development of standard material such as training documentation and web content on behalf of senior officers, to ensure staff have access to required information about IT services and products.

  10. Suggest improvements to methods and processes in order to support the continuous improvement of IT services.

  11. Follow set emergency response processes and procedures as required to provide support in enabling emergency food assistance needs to be met.

  12. Perform other related duties as required.

SPECIFIC POST REQUIREMENTS (As required by the Hiring Manager)


  • Experience working with Windows Server and Windows environments, including Active Directory Management and Microsoft packages, Office 365.
  • Experience in hardware and software troubleshooting and in resolving complex technical issues.
  • Experience in LAN/WAN environments
  • Experience with the application of client services standards to resolve or escalate clients’ service problems.


  • Experience working with managers in defining requirements for functional area.
  • Experience working in a United Nations common system, international or non-governmental organization.
  • Experience with network controllers or familiarity with shared network drives.


  • Education: Completion of secondary school education. A post-secondary certificate in the related functional area and certifications in Windows Environment and Networking LAN/WAN are desirable.
  • Experience: Five or more years of progressively responsible work experience in the area of Information Technology ( including one year at the G4 level for internal candidates)s.
  • Language: Working knowledge (proficiency/FAO level C) of English.

  • Service Management : Understands and follows the established standards and protocols for service excellence within own domain to maintain quality of delivery and high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Client Management : Exhibits a detailed understanding of customers’ IT requests in order to effectively address and manage internal customers ‘needs. Identifies recurrent issues to propose long-term solutions.
  • Procurement and Contract Management : Assists in the technology selection process by collating information on vendors and/or products for evaluation against criteria.
