Full Charge Bookkeeper (Part-Time)

An international NGO, registered in the US with operations in Guatemala, seeks a part-time, full charge Bookkeeper for 10-15 hours per month (10 for most months, with occasional need for more).

Mayan Families is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization registered in California, which works in partnership with a Guatemalan Association based in Panajachel, Guatemala. Working together, the organizations develop educational, economic, and nutritional opportunities and assistance to the Indigenous populations around the Lake Atitlan area of Guatemala. Mayan Families has an annual budget of $1.2 million, the majority of which is executed in Guatemala.

The Bookkeeper holds primary responsibility for day-to-day financial practices at Mayan Families, including, but not limited to:

  • Running payroll biweekly for 1 FTE and 1 PTE, and 5 contract staff (including bookkeeper).

  • Tracking income and expenses by class.

  • Reconciling financial statements from monthly transactions and entering data into the organization’s Quickbooks records.

  • Reconciling bank statements monthly.

  • Generating reports on profit & loss against budget on a monthly basis.

  • Paying and tracking invoices as needed (no more than 5 per month).

  • Working closely with the Board Treasurer and staff members to provide financial information as required.

  • Working with our external Accountant to complete the annual 990 and audit every two years.

This position is remote, and can be based anywhere in the US or Guatemala.


  • Business or Accounting educational background, as a degree or certification.

  • 3+ years of experience in bookkeeping with nonprofits.

  • Fluent in both English and Spanish, in order to communicate with our US Board and Guatemalan Finance team.

  • Proficient with Quickbooks Online, Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

  • Able to work efficiently, both independently and collaboratively.

  • Organized and work effectively to meet deadlines.

  • Willingness to identify both problems and solutions.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Salary range $25-30/hour, depending on experience.
