A day in the life of a Director of HR, South Sudan

Job Duties

The Director of Human Resources (HR) is responsible for all aspects of human resources functions for Samaritan’s Purse in the Republic of South Sudan, including but not limited to: recruitment, orientation, training/development, staff care, and exit procedures. He/she will be responsible to provide front line human resources services for all SP staff in the country. Responsible for handling all human resources matters and will provide quality and efficient service including, but not limited to, the development and amendment as well as implementation of policies and procedures. This position will receive, respond, resolve or route all employee related inquiries and will work with other staff to promote team harmony, effectiveness and enhance service satisfaction to support SP mission in the country.

  • Develop, amend and implement HR policies, procedures and systems to ensure that organizational and operational goals are met in a timely fashion. Ensure that all systems and procedures are consistent with the Field Operating Guide for Samaritan’s Purse and the laws of South Sudan.
  • As systems and procedures are implemented, manage the process for national staff as it relates to Staffing, Compensation, Benefits, Time-Off, Performance Management, Rewards & Recognition, Staff Care, Payroll, Succession Plans, Organizational Development, Training, Compliance and Record Keeping.
  • Manage HR vendor relationships, such as legal counsel, health insurance, training and other contracts as needed.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for all staff on HR issues. Coordinate with International headquarters on International field staff related issues.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to HR staff members on daily work priorities. Mentor and train HR staff to increase capacity. Handle any issues that junior staff members are unable to handle.

Qualifications & Experience

Master’s degree (M A.) from an accredited college or university in Human Resources Management, communication, or related field or a Bachelor’s Degree and professional certification (PHR, SHPR or IPHR); AND ten years related experience and/or training in HR Management; or equivalent combination of education and experience. One year of college-level Biblical studies strongly preferred.

  • Computer proficiency in Ms Word, MS excel spread sheet
  • Knowledge of South Sudan labor laws is highly preferred
  • Excellent skills in problem solving and conflict resolution, crisis management and training facilitation.
  • Ability to work well within a team and build positive team spirit.
  • Highly self-motivated.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and work under pressure in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability to plan, organize, manage time, and meet deadlines in an ever changing environment.
