Location: Flexible (remote work arrangements will be considered for candidates located within Eastern Standard Time to Central European Standard Time)

The Refugee Hub was founded at the University of Ottawa in 2012. Our mission is to foster justice and human rights for refugees at local, national, and international levels through innovative research, programs and partnerships. We are supported in our work by a team of in-house experts, a wide range of consultants, and a broad and diverse community of partners and stakeholders.

Our growing Knowledge Hub advances cutting-edge research on a range of refugee protection and migration topics and supports the strengthening of the evidence base underlying our policy and programmatic work on refugee sponsorship, resettlement, and complementary pathways.

Position Description

The Refugee Hub is seeking a Senior Research Analyst (SRA) to join our Research, Policy and Law Portfolio. The SRA will play a central role in guiding strategy and implementation of the Refugee Hub’s research activities, especially in relation to refugee sponsorship, resettlement, and complementary pathways to protection. The SRA will contribute to scholarship, policy research, network building, and knowledge mobilization, and play a key leadership role within the RPL team, providing guidance and supervision to an interdisciplinary research team.

This is a full-time, 12-month term position (parental leave replacement). While the position is based in Ottawa, Canada, a possibility to work remotely within the range of Eastern Standard Time to Central European Standard Time will be considered.


Reporting to and working closely with the Legal and Research Director, the Senior Research Analyst:

  • Helps to guide strategy and implementation of research and knowledge mobilization activities for the Research, Policy and Law portfolio (RPL)

  • Co-leads an interdisciplinary research team consisting of law students, graduate students (Master’s and PhD) and postdoctoral fellows, contributing to academic, policy and legal research and publications. This includes substantive guidance and supervision; workplan management; project management; quality assurance; and administrative management (recruitment, contracting, etc.).

  • Supports and/or leads the development of academic and policy publications with a focus on refugee sponsorship, resettlement and complementary pathways.

  • Provides project management and coordination for the “Knowledge Hub”, a cross-functional project that facilitates knowledge acquisition and knowledge management in support of the Refugee Hub’s policy and programmatic work. This includes developing and maintaining relevant substantive expertise; managing external consultants; overseeing ongoing/evergreen literature reviews and knowledge dissemination products; and cross-functional coordination with colleagues in relevant teams and programme areas.

  • Contributes to the development and implementation of legal educational programs, including supporting the development of course content and delivery methods

  • Contributes to the development of knowledge networks and stakeholder relationships, including organizing and representing the Refugee Hub at conferences, events and meetings, and helping to disseminate and promote Refugee Hub research products and activities.


  • A graduate degree (PhD preferred) in the social sciences, humanities, or law
  • Expertise and/or publication experience in relevant areas, including refugee studies, migration studies, refugee resettlement, community sponsorship, newcomer integration, human rights, international law, policy studies, political science, international development
  • Outstanding written communication and knowledge transfer skills in English
  • Outstanding research skills: experience designing, managing, and leading high-quality qualitative research projects in a post-secondary research context
  • Demonstrated team leadership and management capabilities

The following skills and experience will be considered assets:

  • Scholarship on relevant topics
  • Experience mentoring, teaching, or supervising students
  • Experience with tri-council (or equivalent) academic grants
