Yemen is the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with up to 80% of the population currently in need of some form of humanitarian or protective assistance, many due to a breakdown in existing support systems and the deterioration of all basic services. Protracted conflict, economic deterioration, and the sustained non-payment of public salaries have left two-thirds of Yemen’s population – 20 million people – facing a crisis or emergency food insecurity and a threat of widespread famine.
NRC has operated in Yemen since 2012. Currently, NRC operates in ten governorates clustered under three Area Offices, with each area office managed by an Area Manager in a significantly decentralized structure. The overall budget turn-over exceeds US$ 35 million with a total staffing of more than 300.
About the position
The position is suitable for a dedicated and experienced media and communications professional who has previously worked in fast-paced humanitarian contexts. The role will lead in developing NRC Yemen’s Media and Communications strategy in support of delivering our advocacy priorities. You will work with programme and field teams, and conflict-affected people to develop touching and high-quality media and communications products and packages for traditional media, social media, and communicate the work NRC is doing on the ground both in English and Arabic as appropriate. NRC is looking for an all-rounder with strong technical skills as well as an engaging writing style. The role will also facilitate and support programme teams to build their skills in developing quality communications products for donors. And will act as one of our key spokespeople for liaising with regional and international media so we are looking for someone with a passion for telling stories and articulating issues to a range of audiences.
The day to day
- Serve as one of NRC’s official spokespersons for all media in Yemen;
- Lead on developing, coordinating, and implementing external communications media (international, regional, and local media and social media, communications of NRC’s programmes, strategy, proposals, and plans as needed for Yemen;
- Develop annual activity and work plans for utilising external communication and media opportunities to advance programmatic and advocacy objectives;
- Cooperate with relevant internal and external partners (Head Office, East Africa, and Yemen Regional Office, Middle East Regional Office, UN, INGOs) to develop coordinated and effective media communication campaigns;
- Ensure adherence to NRC policies and donor visibility and reporting requirements in all external communications, and support programme team to adhere to these regulations;
- Be in constant dialogue with Advocacy Manager and Area Managers, technical specialists, and Advisers (as relevant) in order to cover NRC Yemen´s programmes;
- Regularly travel to NRC´s field offices to cover and collect media material from NRC distributions, programmes, and fieldwork;
- Proactively pitch media stories linked to NRC advocacy and programmatic priorities in Yemen to key media outlets;
- Establish and strengthen strategic relationships with international, regional, and national journalists covering Yemen. In particular, focusing on targeted geographical priorities including Arabic, European, and US media in line with country advocacy and funding strategies;
- Be an active member of NRC´s Global Communication Network and Middle East Regional Network;
- Promote Yemen in national, regional, and international media for advocacy and programme purposes, including through maintaining a network of journalists in Yemen, the region and internationally who cover conflict and humanitarian issues in Yemen;
- In coordination with the Yemen Advocacy Manager and the Regional Media Advisers and Head of Media and Communication at Head Office, develop strategic communication priorities in line with the country Advocacy Strategies and broader Country Office Annual Plan of Action;
- Ensure the delivery of quality communication products in English and Arabic (feature stories, press releases, infographics, photo-stories, videos, documentaries, etc.);
- Liaise closely with the programme teams to ensure that NRC’s work is featured appropriately in various online and print platforms;
- Regularly create content for NRC’s social media platforms; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and for NRC´s website; Advise CD and Advocacy Manager of strategic use of national media opportunities to develop NRC’s reputation; Support field teams with the preparation for external visits to NRC field activities by media, donors, and others, ensuring NRC’s media guidelines and policies are observed. As our prospective candidate, you have the following;
- Higher relevant university degree in journalism, media, communications, or relevant experience;
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a similar position;
- Excellent English, oral and written (sound journalistic writing style), Arabic skills advantage;
- An all-round experience in photography, video, and social media skills are highly desirable;
- Knowledge of the Yemen context and broader region;
- Knowledge of Yemen, regional media, and communication networks;
- Knowledge of communicating humanitarian needs and ethical reporting of beneficiaries;
- Commitment to humanitarian principles and dedication to humanitarian work;
- Flexibility including the ability to work overtime on weekends and evenings according to needs and requests. This will include regular travel to field sites across Yemen during the week.
