The Senior External Relations Manager is responsible for managing and implementing activities to secure resources from public and private funders. The GARDP Senior External Relations Manager’s role is to design, develop, implement and execute funding-related activities including prospect research, policy analysis, funder identification, and funder cultivation activities. The GARDP Senior External Relations Manager is also responsible for stewarding funders including producing narrative and financial reports, sharing information on GARDP’s activities, briefing funders, following-up on pledge commitments, maintaining accurate information to support ongoing relationships, and ensuring appropriate funder recognition.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Secure funding:

  • Write and coordinate the production of cohesive and persuasive proposals, budgets, and activity plans for public and private funders
  • Remain proactively informed and act upon potential funding opportunities within the medical research, innovation, access and global health landscapes
  • Prospect potential funders
  • Develop engagement plans for assigned funders
  • Develop and execute advocacy strategies & activities targeting new and current funders
  • Negotiate agreements with funders

Steward donors:

  • Write and coordinate the production and submission of funder reports
  • Write and design funder presentations and communications material for funder-related events or meetings
  • Update funders on GARDP activities
  • Prepare briefing profiles on funders for staff & senior management and Board members
  • Coordinate funder meetings and GARDP staff involved with stewarding funders
  • Organize funder field visits or presentations and ad hoc reports
  • Follow-up on funding commitments & draft acknowledgment letters

Administrative tasks:

  • Maintain funder files and documentation, including in relationship management database (Salesforce)
  • Participate in the development of the annual action plan
  • Participate in relevant team meetings

Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong knowledge of the technical aspects of external relations, including resource mobilization (ability to develop and implement funder engagement strategies, understanding of donor moves management & donor development continuum methodologies), policy analysis, project management, strategic communications and diplomacy
  • Strong ability to build lasting relationships between GARDP and funders
  • Strong ability to solicit multi-year commitments at the major gift level (tenacious and able to create a sense of urgency; excellent follow-up with funders)
  • Strong proposal and report writing skills (clear and concise composition skills, ability to articulate a convincing case for support aligned with funder scope of interest, storytelling ability, ability to anticipate funder queries and rebuttals)
  • Strong ability to work effectively as part of a global and multicultural team


  • Over 8 years of experience in a fundraising role with a track record of raising significant funds
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a multicultural, multilocation team environment and a matrix structure
  • Understanding of and commitment to global health, medical innovation, scientific research, and access to medicines issues from experience working in the non-for-profit sector


  • Advanced post graduate degree or graduate degree with equivalent in experience to reach Masters’ level. Studies in development, sciences, public health, global health, business administration or related field

Other Requirements

  • Passion for GARDP’s mission (intellectual curiosity and willingness to learn about scientifically complex concepts, understanding of R&D and drug development, diseases, medical field & global health, multi-stakeholder partnership model as well as for the philanthropic & not-for profit sector)
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Proficiency in other languages desirable (French, German, Spanish)
  • Very good knowledge of Microsoft Suite
  • Knowledge of Salesforce desirable
