Save the Children South Africa – Background Save the Children South Africa (SCSA) is implementing a programme that seeks to ensure that all children benefit from a strengthened child – rights system that delivers and monitor the realisation of their rights, and ensure that children experience less violence in schools, homes and communities. The programme also aims to support children to influence Local, Provincial and National Governance to ensure their survival, learning and protection. Through this programme, SCSA intends to push for increased public investment in children and reduction of violence against children in both school and home settings. JOB PURPOSE: The Advocacy Manager is responsible for developing and driving the implementation of an effective influencing strategy and tactics for Save the Children’s priority campaign, working closely with colleagues in members, and regional and country offices. The overall responsibility of the Advocacy Manager is to lead and coordinate SCSA’s local to global advocacy agenda. He/she will be responsible to advocate and communicate on child rights issues domestically, regionally and globally with a particular focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Violence against Children, Children on the Move and follow – ups on concluding observations from the treaty bodies. In consultation with the CEO’s Office, Programmes Director, Child Rights Governance and Child Protection Thematic Leads, he/she will set SCSA’s annual local to global advocacy goals and targets for relevant policy influence and change. Furthermore, he/she will provide advocacy support and guidance to provincial offices.  With the support of the Regional and Global Advocacy Offices, s/he will identify opportunities and platforms at regional and global level to amplify the voices of children, particularly a girl child. He/she will work under the supervision of the Programmes Director, and in close collaboration with the CEO’s office, CRG and CPP Thematic Leads. KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY Develop and implement a SCSA advocacy strategy and local to global advocacy initiatives. Coordinate local to global advocacy work within Programmes Department at Head Office Preparing, maintaining and developing the child rights advocacy work of SCSA and feed into the Regional and Global Advocacy offices Support the Save the Children South Africa CEO ensuring that she or he is effectively supported to advocate on Save the Children’s priorities in external forums such as the WEF and the UN Coordinating and undertaking advocacy at national, regional and international level Initiate and support SCSA’s lobbying and campaign activities at national, regional and global level Support provincial offices and partners to design and implement advocacy interventions Represent SCSA at relevant national, regional and international advocacy forums and networks AND help secure influence with targeted policy and decision-makers at the national level and at key global events. Collate, analyze and share local to global advocacy lessons learnt and best practices Identify platforms and opportunities to maximize children’s voices nationally, globally and regionally Ensure that Save the Children makes maximum use of existing advocacy expertise and resources in members, regional and country offices and draws on external networks to strengthen capacity – especially through strategy development and creation of advocacy materials, identifying gaps in knowledge and skills and providing strategic support and challenge – to do effective influencing Work with the AU Advocacy office to contextualize objectives for the Global Goals World Cup Develop key SDGs messages to communicated at different platforms and with different stakeholders Initiate bilateral meetings with key treaty bodies and structures including SADC, and AU delegates to push for the implementation of SDG Participate in national, regional and global advocacy event and networking with civil society, Governments, UN, AU, SADC and others relevant advocacy events. QUALIFICATIONS University Degree in international relations, social sciences, Communications, Public Health, law or related technical fields. EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS At least 8 years of experience of working in the South African Children’s or Youth Sector; Proven history of working with child rights advocacy at least 5 years, preferably at both national, regional and global level Driver’s license preferable manual car Experience in working with different spheres of South African government, departments and Civil Society Organisations; Municipal Processes, particularly Integrated Development Plans Knowledge and experience in South Africa’s Child Rights Sector and Child Rights Programming and Child Participation Experience and understanding of Child Rights reporting processes to treaty body such as UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and African Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. Understanding of and commitment to children’s rights, in terms of national, regional and international child rights instruments. Skills to successfully network and co-operate with various partners Excellent writing, communications and networking skills in English.
