ICARDA is in the process of implementing an exciting program of organizational change, including a new institutional strategy that will more effectively address today’s development challenges and a new communications strategy to position ICARDA as the “go-to” organization on agricultural research for development in non-tropical dry areas. In this context, ICARDA is looking for a dynamic and creative Senior Communications Specialist to provide strategic outreach advice and operational assistance in the communications activities and branding of the organization.

The successful candidate will work closely with ICARDA scientists and senior staff to identify significant and newsworthy research outputs and impact stories, and then reach core target audiences with the information to establish ICARDA as a credible, independent authority on the subjects of agriculture, food and nutrition security, and climate change in the non-tropical dry areas.

The successful candidate will also build ICARDA’s communications capacity by helping scientists and staff to effectively represent ICARDA’s mission and impact to broad audiences. He or she will help develop and implement engagement strategies, high-profile activities and top-quality communications materials.

Main responsibilities

  • Build strong relationships with ICARDA scientists in the countries where ICARDA is active to disseminate their research, publications and impact stories to reporters, donors, policymakers and leaders of the international development community.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with journalists and editors from key media outlets, including print, online, television, and radio reporters as well as bloggers, globally.
  • Produce timely, high-quality, high-impact communication materials, including the corporate website, annual and flagship reports, videos, and science impact briefs, to enhance visibility and understanding of ICARDA’s mission and impact internationally, with a particular attention to donors, policy makers and strategic partners.
  • Organize events and outreach campaigns, including launches of ICARDA’s flagship report and policy seminars.
  • In consultation with scientists, establish effective systems, policies and processes for information and knowledge sharing and management, both within the organization and with external stakeholders.
  • Build ICARDA’s communications capacity by supporting scientists and staff to ensure their outreach is high-quality, engaging, and consistent with other ICARDA outreach. Together with other units, organize and provide training in media interviews, presentation, writing and knowledge management for the scientists.
  • Assist the Head of Communications with any other duties that might be necessary.

Education, qualifications and experience

  • A Master’s degree in journalism, English, international affairs or other relevant areas, with at least 7 years of experience, with a track record of communicating science and running successful communications campaigns. A Bachelor’s degree will be accepted if complemented by substantive, longer work experience;
  • Ability to communicate complex research results in a concise and engaging fashion, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clean, engaging copy, including op-eds, stories, articles and reports of highest quality on deadline.
  • Ability to build new relationships with existing contacts at major media outlets.
  • A keen understanding of traditional and digital media and newsworthiness.
  • Ability to convince reporters to cover an issue or event.
  • Experience of proactively using social media and developing websites to engage with the media and secure press coverage.
  • Ability to work effectively with a high degree of independence; excellent interpersonal skills to build effective working relationships in in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.

Desirable qualifications and competencies

  • Background knowledge in economics, agriculture, science or global health strongly preferred.
  • Overseas experience, especially in Africa or Asia, strongly preferred.


This is an internationally recruited position for which ICARDA offers an attractive compensation package including a competitive salary, housing allowance, non-contributory retirement plan, medical insurance and leave provisions. All benefits are denominated and paid in US Dollars. The successful candidate will be offered an initial contract of 3 years, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds. The first year will be probationary period.
