Background

Photography plays a crucial role in UNICEF’s work; its role in creating visibility cannot be understated. UNICEF Ghana uses powerful images to support as well as complement its visibility efforts, these photos are used in publications, annual reports, and donor reports, and on social media platforms. The photos are also shared with other UNICEF offices around the world.

Assignment Tasks

Junior level consultant: Photographic documentation of launch events, meetings, field visits etc

Senior level consultant: High-profile visits, high-level events, some field visits etc.

Score of work for both junior and senior levels of consultants will include:

  1. High quality documentary photography per UNICEF standard rules as outlined in the Branding Toolkit and photographic guidance. The coverage will be in Ghana on a range of different assignment/subjects in digital and original format per a brief.
  2. Descriptive captions for all broad edit photos from central characters/subjects in the photo coverage serving to tell a first-person story; quotes from a more personal nature from photo coverage character/subjects directly addressing the camera.
  3. Submit to UNICEF broad edit of photographs with specifications including photo format, transmission if required, captioning etc, following terms as described in UNICEF Digital Format for transmission terms
  4. Submit with the pictures release forms signed by subjects.

Methodology

The consultant will travel to designated places across the country if required to take high quality photos according to a brief. The photos will be guided by international photography norms that protect children’s identity in both the making and the use of images of children.

The consultant will seek community entry as well as engage families, guardians and caregivers in order to be given the consent to photograph minors where it is required. Local events to be covered include programme launches, meetings, photo opportunities, activities in the field. UNICEF may assign the consultant to cover other events as per a brief.

The Consultant will follow the UNICEF digital format, captioning and transmission terms (if applicable)

Expected Deliverables

  1. Two copies (DVD) of selected original photo images in print /slide or appropriate digital format
  2. Upload images to central point virtually with access to designated UNICEF staff
  3. Captions, image format and transmission (if applicable) for each photo according to UNICEF requirements.

Required qualification and experience

Junior level consultant:

  1. Diploma or advanced technical diploma in communication, photography or related field of study.
  2. Five years experience in professional photography and documentary photography, with appropriate demonstrated experience manifested through ability to take high quality photos.

Senior level consultant**:**

  1. First degree or minimum of advanced technical diploma in communication, photography or related field of study.
  2. Eight years experience in professional and high profile documentary photography. Evidence of images in international publications and participation in photography exhibitions required.

General skills/competencies required for both junior and senior levels.

  1. Ability to be spontaneous will be an advantage (candid photography)
  2. Ability to deliver images according to the specified quality and technical requirements
  3. Experience working in rural Ghana preferable but not mandatory
  4. Ability to communicate with children, rural people and local authorities an advantage
  5. Proven ability to work with lighting indoors and cover functions will be required.
  6. Previous experience working with UNICEF will be an advantage

General Conditions and logistics

  1. Consultant will provide his/her own photographic equipment, materials, i.e. computer, office supplies, camera, software, hardware, insurance as well as office space.
  2. UNICEF will handle arrangements for travels to the field if required.
  3. The reproduction rights purchased with the assignment are for "non-exclusive world rights in perpetuity"

    Copyright, Patents and other Proprietary Rights

  4. UNICEF has first selection rights to all originals taken on this assignment with non-exclusive concomitant world rights in all media in perpetuity. [***For some UNICEF VIP coverage, image release or copyright may be subject to restrictions for embargo or VIP image approval reasons – to be specified in contract.*** ]

  5. At UNICEF’s request, the Contractor shall take all necessary steps, execute all necessary documents and generally assist in securing such proprietary rights and transferring them to UNICEF in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law

Confidential nature of documents

  1. All maps, drawings, photographs, mosaics, plans, report’s recommendations, estimates, documents and all other data compiled by or received by the Contractor under this contract shall be the property of UNICEF shall be treated as confidential and shall be delivered only to the UNICEF authorized official on completion of work under this contract
  2. The Contractor may not communicate at any time to any person, Government, or authority external to UNICEF, any information known to it by reason of its association with UNICEF which has not been made public except with the authority of UNICEF nor shall the Contractor at anytime use such information to private advantage. These obligations do not lapse upon termination of this contract with UNICEF.
