Handicap International has developed strategic partnerships with medical humanitarian organizations since 2010 in order to improve access to early physical rehabilitation services as well as specialized physiotherapy follow-up for medical conditions resulting from violence and torture.
The medical partner of Handicap International has set up a Mental and Medical Rehabilitation project for Migrants under the modality of care provision at a clinic, it aims to ensure a better access for migrants to Medical and Mental Health care. A significant proportion of the patients seen at the clinic have been victims of Sexual Gender Based Violence ( SGBV ) , ill treatment and torture. Patients coming to the clinic through Health promotion activities in the communities and/or self-presentation are referred to have access to mental health counselling, psychiatric care, physical rehabilitation and gynecological investigation
The center aims to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to deal with these issues, including the medical consequences of violence, SGBV and ill-treatment. In addition, it also targets local professionals – including gynecologists , nurses , health promoters, , social workers , psychiatrists, physiotherapists and psychotherapists – that either work on a day to day basis in the center clinic. For its current physiotherapy department is made up of 5 national PT and has a capacity to service up to 40 patients a day as individual and Group Therapy modality , further development to answer to new patients and capacity streamlining is needed as well as capitalizing on the outcomes of this care through networking and operational research and analysis.
